About the Jazz Improvisation Program
NYJW has led this Jazz Improvisation Workshop in conservatories around the world, and have impeccably perfected the key components to teaching improvisation. This intensive covers many different composition styles, as well as harmonic, melodic and rhythmic principles. This program is open to all instrumentalists and vocalists. Syllabus to be posted soon.
Dates: August 24 – 25 – 26 – 27
All sessions will be held from 11am to 5pm at our main space around the corner of Times Square. More detailed outline and information on the schedule will follow.
-At least 18 years of age
-A willingness to learn
-Instructors may ask for a recorded sample before admission
-Some of our intensives are better suited to intermediate and advanced musicians with a minimum of a few years on their instrument; other summer intensives, such as the beginner vocal and choir, are open to everyone. More details can be discussed during registration.
About the Faculty
Darius Jones is a critically acclaimed alto saxophonist and composer who joined the New York music community in 2005. In the last decade he has amazed and inspired musicians and audiences from widely divergent backgrounds with his meticulously honed musical gifts. Soul-power is at his foundation; forward-looking expression always at the core. He was signed to AUM Fidelity Records in February 2009 and already has a string of diverse recordings, including his 2009 debut as a leader, Man’ish Boy (A Raw and Beautiful Thing) and Cosmic Lieder: The Darkseid Recital, an intergenerational partnership with pianist Matthew Shipp, which came out in 2014.
He has collaborated with artists including Gerald Cleaver’s Black Host, Oliver Lake, William Parker, Trevor Dunn’s Proof Readers, Cooper-Moore, Eric Revis Quartet, Nasheet Waits “Equality” Band, Tarbaby, Branford Marsalis, Andrew Cyrille, Jason Moran, Kris Davis, James Carter, Vijay Iyer, Fay Victor, Sam Newsome, and many more. Commissioned by John Zorn, Jones recently lead a week-long residency at NYC’s The Stone, showcasing the diverse and prolific offering of his compositions and ensembles. Learn more

What to expect:
When you join us for one or more of our intensives, you can expect to become a member of our tightly knit community. There will be musicians from all over the world looking to learn, explore and make connections. You will be making connections that last a lifetime. A typical day will be as follows:
11:00am – 1:00pm: Morning Sessions
1:00pm – 2:00pm Lunch Break
2:00pm – 5:00pm: Afternoon Sessions
Student will normally organize small groups or go check out some concerts. See “Fun Evening Activities” in the General Information page for more details. There will be opportunities for every student to perform outside of the school, more details coming up soon.
