About the Vocal Intensive Advanced Jazz Program


The workshop is led by the multi-talented and accomplished, Fay Victor, who focuses on topics such as vocal styling, phrasing, ear training, rhythmic diversity, improvisation, vocal health, diction and more. Participants will also get a chance to share the stage with Fay during a live performance at the Lexington Hotel. *NEW: We offer the option of working an extra day with Fay Victor, extending the workshop to Monday. This day will focus the role of business in music, which includes topics like marketing/branding, new & social media, and band leadership. This will be an additional $150.

Prerequisites:
-Previous experience singing and a willingness to learn
-Instructors may ask for a recorded sample before admission
-At least 17 years of age
-Some of our intensives are better suited to intermediate and advanced musicians with a minimum of a few years on their instrument; other summer intensives, such as the beginner vocal and choir, are open to everyone. More details can be discussed during registration.

About the Faculty


Fay Victor- Fay Victor has been hailed by the New York Times as “artistically complete” for her unique vocal approach to the blues, jazz, free improvisation and her original compositions. Starting from the jazz tradition, Victor has gone on to encompass a multi-genre approach to music, lyrics and song called “Freesong.” She has released Eight (8) critically acclaimed recordings as a leader Victor has performed throughout the USA, Europe, Japan, India, Russia, and Mexico working with a veritable who’s-who of musicians such as Anthony Braxton, Amiri Baraka, Misha Mengelberg, William Parker, Roswell Rudd, Andrew Cyrille, Laurence “Butch’ Morris, Gary Lucas, John Medeski, Nicole Mitchell, Marvin Sewell, Han Bennink, Darius Jones and Tyshawn Sorey amongst others. Victor gives private instruction focused on technique for improvising vocalists, runs a weekly jazz vocal workshop at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music and a weekly Advanced Vocal Class for the New York Jazz Workshop, running their annual 5- day Jazz Vocal Summit as well. Victor has also taught at institutions such as the Amsterdam Conservatory (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), CalArts (Los Angeles, CA), UC-Berkeley (Berkeley, Ca), UC-IRVINE (Irvine, CA), the Jazz School (Berkeley, CA) and Rostov Jazz School (Rostov-on-Don, Russia). What to expect:
When you join us for one or more of our intensives, you can expect to become a member of our tightly knit community. There will be musicians from all over the world looking to learn, explore and make connections. You will be making connections that last a lifetime. A typical day will be as follows:

11:00am – 1:00pm: Morning Sessions
1:00pm – 2:00pm  Lunch Break
2:00pm – 5:00pm: Afternoon Sessions
Evenings: Free

Student will normally organize small groups or go check out some concerts. See “Fun Evening Activities” in the Summer Workshop General Information page for more details. There will be opportunities for every student to perform outside of the school, more details coming up soon.
